It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Astoria Police Officer Sam Whisler.
Officer Whisler unexpectedly passed away on July 9th, 2021, at the incredibly young age of 26. Officer Whisler has been a member of the Astoria Police department since January 2020. He previously served with the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office as a search and rescue volunteer at the young age of 13 starting in 2008 and continued in search and rescue until 2016. He was sworn in as an enforcement cadet at Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office in 2013 and in May of 2017 was sworn in as a reserve deputy and continued in that capacity until he joined the Astoria Police Department in January 2020. Sam also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Gearhart Fire Department and was a lifeguard and rescue swimmer for Seaside Fire Department in 2016.
Sam was loved by all and always had a smile on his face and a positive attitude.
He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Christin, Sam’s wife and their two children, along with Sam’s parents and the entire family.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a contribution be made to Helping Hands Reentry Outreach Centers at https://helpinghandsreentry.org/
Preparations for Sam’s memorial service are still being finalized. We want to make sure Sam is appropriately honored and provide the family with the recognition Sam deserves for his service to many communities.
We are working with the Fallen Badge Foundation and Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office to assist us.
