The Astoria Fire Department has volunteer programs designed to allow individuals to match their skills and time with the needs of the City of Astoria.

Volunteer Firefighter
Astoria Fire Department is always accepting applications for new volunteer firefighters. Firefighting is a challenging as it is rewarding!  You are "on-call" when people - your neighbors - need help urgently! If you like the challenge, the community service and the rewards of being a firefighter can give you, then become a Volunteer Firefighter. 

Student Intern Firefighter
If you are a student pursuing a higher education in the Fire/EMS field, you may be interested in becoming an Intern Firefighter at the Astoria Fire Department. As a Intern Firefighter, you can live at our Uniontown Fire Station, you work on one of the three work shifts, and run calls as a member of the team, while taking college classes.

  • APRIL 24: All day process beginning at 9:00 AM - Written Testing, Interview Panel, Physical Abilities Test. Top candidates will be granted a Chief's Interview.
  • APRIL 30: Conditional Job Offer, Drug Screening, Background Investigation begins
  • JUNE 1: Final Selection and job offer
  • JUNE 14-18: Medical Exam
  • JULY 2-5: Move into AFD Station 2
  • JULY 6-30: AFD Academy

Monthly Stipend: July-September $750.00; October-June $450.00
Off Duty Community Events & Training: $8.00
Off Duty Call Response: $5.50

Paid tuition, fees and required course books for up to 18 credit hours per term at Clatsop Community College. If a student wishes to take online courses from another college or commute elsewhere for specific classes, tuition costs will be reimbursed at Clatsop Community College credit hour cost, not to exceed the 18 credit hours. The student will be responsible for the difference in cost, if any.
