Dan Crutchfield, fire Chief

 

Dan Crutchfield began his fire service career with the City of Coos Bay in June of 1993 when he became a volunteer firefighter with the Coos Bay Fire Department. In July of 1996, Dan transitioned from volunteer to a full-time career firefighter. From 2004-2010 Dan served as a volunteer lieutenant for the Charleston Rural Fire Protection District. The Coos Bay Fire Department promoted Dan to the rank of battalion chief in January of 2013. In March of 2019 Dan became the fire chief for the City of Astoria.

 

Dan has attended Southwestern Oregon Community College, Columbia Southern University, and Waldorf College. He has earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science and a Bachelor of Science in Fire Administration. Dan is an Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate, Hazardous Materials Specialist, Instructor II and a Fire Officer IV.

 

Chief Crutchfield oversees the overall operations of the Astoria Fire Department. Chief Crutchfield sets policy and works with other city officials to develop a budget which he administers. Chief Crutchfield directly supervises Deputy Chief Terry Corbit who is responsible for daily operations and training, Deputy Chief Brian McCarthy who is responsible for emergency management and fire marshal duties and Casey Litwin who serves as the administrative assistant. Chief Crutchfield is a member of the Office of State Fire Marshal Hazmat Team 11. Chief Crutchfield is the chairperson of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) and also serves as the Clatsop County Fire Defense Board Chief.

Terry Corbit started in the fire service, as a high school senior, with the Unalaska Fire Department in January 1985 as a volunteer. In March 1986, Terry joined Pierce County Fire District #9 as a resident firefighter. Terry had the opportunity to work as a temporary firefighter twice for the City of Puyallup for 6 months and 4 months. Also once for Pierce County Fire District #9 for 4 months.

In April 1990, Terry was hired by the City of Astoria as a full-time career firefighter. Terry was promoted to Driver/Engineer in November of 1993, to Lieutenant in March of 2008, and to Deputy Chief in June, 2019.

 

Terry attended L.H. Bates Vocational Technical and completed their Fire Science Program. Terry attended Clatsop Community College and Portland Community College. He has earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science. Terry is an Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate, Hazardous Materials Technician, and Instructor I. Terry also recently completed the required training for certification as a Maritime Operator.

 

Terry is currently the fire department’s training officer. Terry supervises the three Lieutenants, represents management on the department safety committee, investigates accident/incidents that occur within the organization. He is also the department’s quartermaster and responsible for pump testing.

Brian McCarthy began his fire service career in October of 2000 after 4 years of military service in the United States Navy. Brian was hired by the Deerfield Bannockburn Fire Protection District as a career firefighter/paramedic in October 2000. Brian graduated from the fire academy in December of 2000 and paramedic school in May 2001. Brian served as a part-time fire and life safety educator for many years during his career at Deerfield. Brian was also a fire apparatus engineer while assigned to shift work.

In 2014 Brian was promoted to Fire Marshal. While serving as Fire Marshal, Brian served on the Board for the Northern Illinois Fire Inspectors Association, leaving the organization in 2021 as the Vice President. Brian also was an instructor for the Illinois Fire Inspectors Association.  He was then hired by Astoria and began his duties as Deputy Chief, Fire Marshall, and Emergency Manager in October of 2021.

Brian attended the College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Brian earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science. Brian is an Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Officer 1, Advanced Fire Prevention Officer and Juvenile Fire Setter Interventionalist.

Brian is the department’s Fire Marshal and the Emergency Manager for the City of Astoria. Brian oversees all fire prevention efforts for the fire department. As Emergency Manager, Brian ensures that the community is prepared for emergencies through planning and education.
